i test out my coils the easy way my girlfriend holds the sparkplug wire in one hand the ground in the other i turn over the moter if she screams it works if she screams and swears at me it works really good-high voltage –no response? coil is broken

Doug got a ohm meter and checked out the old coils as you described it seems? most of the coils are okay but most of the condensers are shot simple fix with old lawn mowers is to chuck in a 12volt car one it means i can speed up the process that was an issue before with your help i got a mower going tonite hasnt gonme in years was having problems with the electrics so your tips certainly helped regards brentnz

I am having a problem on a Mark 25. had fire in plugs removed? and cleaned points reinstalled was carfull in the install but now have no spark. checked the coils with the help of you video, all is good but still no fire. what about the condencer? would this cause no fire or how do you check that condencer to see if is good? Any info would be greatly appreciated!!!! THANK YOU

brilliant! i’ve spent the past 2 weeks scratching my head trying to figure out what was wrong with? my mercury 7.5hp! after watching this video i borrowed and ohm meter and within 2 mins managed to determine that the secondary circuit on one coil was dead. cheers doug for the video! i nearly took it to a garage, at £40 an hour labour your video has just saved me a lot of money!

Doug great video, I knew many years back how to do this a forgot over time and being out of the industry. Just a thought, I live in FL and down hear you get petty sweaty and if your sweaty and touch tne leads to the meter it will read what the resistance is between your fingers. Try not to touch leads? as it will give a false reading.

Hi, Does anyone know whether a multimeter would work? As I can’t find a cheap ohmmeter anywhere here ( UK ). I see the multimeter measures in ohms but doesn’t have the 1000? resistance setting, but would the 2000 setting work just aswell? how many ohms should the outcome be?

How do you remove the steel cover that covers the coils underneath the pulley? I have a? 51-52 elgin and trying to get to the coils to replace them.

I have a 1974 20hp Mercury? and I want to test the coils. Will this procedure work for testing coils on non-magnito ignition systems?

@Jumpinjacks1 His is set at X1000 and he said it read 6 ohms, he should of said 6000 ohms. You must multiply your reading by the scale you set. Digital meters have the” HIGHEST resistance it can measure” number settings 2000 will not work because you need to measure 6000. Switch up to next scale..20K or 20,000 ohms max. The readings WON”T be EXACT! It’ll display 6.00? for 6000 ohms on the 20k setting. but 5.70 or 6.32 is fine also for example. Most DVM’s will work fine for this.

All coils have 2 windings. The low resistance,low “turn” primary winding is connected to the ignition module or points and ground. This winding colapses and induces a magnetic field to the secondary, high resistance, high turn, small wire winding connected to the spark plug and ground. Check between spark plug wire and ground for around 6000? ohms plus or minus 1000 on MOST ignition coils. Some coils will work until hot and fail. Small wire heats up inside and shorts. Look for cracks.
